Energy comparison train - truck / bus

Both trains and trucks / buses consume energy to overcome air resistance and rolling resistance. Resistances increase with increasing speed and increased weight of the vehicles. The total impact on the environment also differs between truck and rail. This applies to everything from fuel to the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure.

Figures in the table give an overview of how the different types of traffic affect both energy and the environment. Here you can also see the great impact of aviation. It is obvious that as much as possible should be transferred to rail transport as soon as possible. It should also be pointed out that it is difficult to find comparable statistics and one must always take into account who produced the statistics and for what purpose.

In the diagrams below, the energy consumption between truck and train can differ as much as between 2 to 12 times more expensive for the truck. The carbon dioxide emissions for trucks have a very big difference because the railway emits very little carbon dioxide.

No deeper analyzes

Without going into any deeper analysis, one can quickly state "there is no doubt that everything that can be transferred to train transport should be done immediately". Our infrastructure solution together with the new InfraMag propulsion will facilitate the development of a completely new infrastructure.

We have also together with meed AMCCT AB produced a simple film that compares transport by rail and by truck. You can watch the film by clicking on the video below
